Berrien County

Michigan is a state with two peninsulas surrounded by water, and these peninsulas have irregular shapes. But, there are two distinct corners at the bottom of the Lower Peninsula . Berrien County is the southwestern corner. Berrien County was named after John M. Berrien, who was attorney general under President Jackson. Berrien's southern border is the state of Indiana , the western border is 42 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline. Berrien also has 306 inland lakes and rivers that make the county popular for fishing, boating and tourism. Another benefit of Lake Michigan is that it moderates the temperate, which extends the growing season, and allows Berrien County to grow fruit trees. There are U-pick fruit farms and unique farm markets all over the county. The magnificent sand dunes at Warren Dunes state park were formed thousands of years ago by receding glaciers that scraped across the continental bedrock, followed by wind and water erosion that reduced the rock to grains of sand. Today, some of the dunes tower 240 feet above Lake Michigan . The county seat of Berrien is St. Joseph , but there is also a little town that has a special significance to me - the town is named Three Oaks. Three Oaks is rich in history and one interesting fact is about a man by the name of Edward Warren.     Mr. Warren operated a general store in Three Oaks and is reported to have noticed an employee of his fix a whale bone corset with a Turkey Feather Quill. This gave Edward Warren the idea to which he started the Warren Featherbone Company, even though it closed its doors many years ago, the factory still stands today (2003). The County has Significance to me, because It's where my mothers family settled after immigrating from Czheckslavakia .
