Calhoun County largest city is Battle Creek its name as you might guess came about in 1824 when John Mulletts surveying party fought with Indians they encountered there on the banks of the Kalamazoo River . Today Battle Creek is probably best known as the Cereal Capitol of the world. It began around 1866 when brothers William Keith Kellogg and Dr. John Kellogg were working for a health sanitarium at Battle Creek . The 'San' as it was called was an internationally famous Seventh Day Adventist hospital and health spa which offered its rich and famous patients a regime of exercise and fresh air, plus a strict diet that prohibited caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, and meat. The brothers believed that diet played an important role in a healthy lifestyle and that breakfast was the most important meal of the day. Many of their guests at the Sanitarium wrote to the brothers requesting supplies of the foods they had been served during their stay. Believe it or not, the world famous cereal flake arrived completely by accident. It happened when The Kellogg brothers were experimenting with different production techniques. In 1902 they had the process perfected and formed a company that would primarily produce and sell Kellogg's Corn Flakes breakfast cereal. Production of Kellogg's Corn Flakes cereal began there on April 1, 1906 and when the factory opened, there were 42 other cereal companies in the Battle Creek area. With the Kalamazoo , Battle Creek and St Joseph rivers, numerous small lakes and streams and acres of farmland Calhoun County makes it's impression on Outdoor-Michigan.
