Ingham county was named after Andrew Jackson's Secretary of the Treasury, Samuel D. Ingham. Ingham County is located in the south central portion of Michigan 's Lower Peninsula . Early settlers arriving in the area avoided Ingham County because the area was a dense forest filled with wide marshes. The first documented land purchase was in 1832. Ingham County 's largest city is Lansing and is located at the crossroads of Interstate 96 and US-27.   Lansing was named to commemorate Revolutionary War Hero and legal author, John Lansing.   In 1847 The Michigan Legislature voted to make this city the state capitol and it was soon carved out of the dense forest. The Capitol Building , which is still in use today, was constructed in 1878, and in 1992 a 45 million dollar renovation was completed (2005).   Right next door is the City of East Lansing , first settled in 1849 by D. Robert Burcham . In 1855 through the Land Grant Act by the national legislature the Michigan Agricultural College was founded, it was the world's first agricultural college. Originally the city was named "Collegeville," but in 1907 the name was changed to East Lansing . The college was eventually renamed Michigan State College, and later Michigan State University . The County seat of Ingham was established in Mason, only 10 miles southeast of Lansing , which fulfilled the requirement that the county seat be no more than a day's travel from any location in the county. With the Red Cedar, Grand river, Sycamore creek, many inland lakes and ponds, not to mention acres of fields, Ingham County is always respectable in Outdoor-Michigan.
