Isabella County

Isabella County is in the geographic center of the lower peninsula.

Before the county was formed in 1831, the area was inhabited by Chippewa Indians. Today, the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Reservation runs the Soaring Eagle Casino in this county. This county was named after a queen of spain -- her name was Isabella.

The county seat is Mount Pleasant , the home of Central Michigan University . Just east of Mount Pleasant is a town called "oil city." This is where the first oil wells were discovered in the late 1920's, and this area was known as the oil capitol of Michigan until the early 1990's.
