A number of Michigan counties have names that sound a little strange -- that's because they come from Indian words. This county has a name that came from a Native American word -- it either came from the Delaware word " lenno " that means "man," or the Shawnee word " lenawai " that means Indian. The county is Lenawee, located in the southeastern corner of the state next to Monroe county. The River Raisin flows through Lenawee county, a small river that holds a surprising number of fish. In 1824 a group of 30 settlers from New York founded the city of Tecumseh on the River Raisin. The county seat is Adrian , centrally located in the county where US-223 meets M-52, about 10 miles north of the Ohio state line. The South Branch of the River Raisin runs through downtown Adrian , a town that has retained a lot of historic architecture from the turn-of-the-century. Adrian is the home of Adrian College and Siena Heights University . The Erie and Kalamazoo Railroad was the first railroad built west of the Allegheny Mountains to operate a steam locomotive. The "Adrian No. 1" was brought through the Erie Canal, and a simple round trip between Adrian and Toledo took a full day. Lenawee County has a few other attractions you might recognize. It's the heart of the scenic Irish Hills, the home of the Michigan International Speedway, Hidden Lakes Gardens , Hayes State Park and the Cambridge Junction historical area.
