Presque Isle County

Presque Isle County was said to be named after the narrow peninsula that goes for several miles into Lake Huron .   The name came from the French fur traders who had to portage over the peninsula to the mainland and means literally, "almost an island." The county of Presque Isle is located on the northeastern side of the tip of the mitt.   Development in the county happened very slowly due to the fact the county had no navigable river and a surveying party in 1839 reported to the state of Michigan the land in the area was worthless.   In the 1860's settlers figured out the area had lots of timber and the lumbering boom began. In 1907 a mining engineer/geologist from New York by the name of H.H. Hindshaw discovered huge limestone deposits in the area.   Today the world's largest Limestone processing plant is located in Rogers City (2004). Rogers City serves as the county seat and is known as "The Nautical City". It's located on one of Michigan 's most natural and undisturbed sections of Lake Huron and is also said to be on of the most scenic drives in Michigan 's Lower peninsula . Rogers City also serves as the county seat for Presque Isle. Another Town of interest is Onaway, located at the western edge of Presque Isle County at the junction of M-68 and M-33.   Onaway is named after an Indian maiden. Onaway is famously known as the Sturgeon Capital of Michigan a designation made by the State Legislature in 1989, because it contains part of Black Lake , historically known as a source for sturgeon that lives in the deep recesses of the Lake .    The sturgeon is a prehistoric fish that can grow over seven feet, live for 150 years and weigh 310 pounds. With almost 100 inland lakes, 72 miles of Lake Huron Shoreline, over 300 miles of streams and 100,000 acres of public land, Presque Isle County fills opportunities in Outdoor Michigan.
