The name for Tuscola county appears to have been Created by Henry Schoolcraft, and is believed to be the combination of the Native American words " dusinagon " meaning level and "cola" meaning lands. Tuscola County is located on the inside of Michigan 's Thumb.   Through most of the nineteenth century, Tuscola County 's main industry was lumber. But In the late 1800's fire ravished most of the land and wiped out its profitable timber industry. The area rebounded by taking advantage of all the newly cleared land, for increased farming, and by the turn of the 20 th century, Tuscola's, county seat and largest city of Caro , was home to the second largest beet sugar factory in America.    The city of Caro was not always known as Caro , it was first named Centerville . To clear up some confusion, in 1869 Centerville was renamed Caro which was a shortened form of Cairo Egypt .   This next fact comes from the Michigan DNR website (page no longer is posted on the internet) and I was not able to confirm this, but according to the DNR, the largest apple ever plucked from a tree weighed three pounds, two ounces, and was picked in Caro , Michigan, I did locate another source that claims The Largest Apple on Record is 3 pounds 4 ounces and was grown Oregon, however it didn't say if that one was plucked from a tree, well anyway you cut it, that is one big apple.   Today Tuscola County is known for the Annual Pumpkin Festival held in October.   It was started in 1981 and attracts nearly 50,000 visitors.   With lots of Rich Farmland and the adjoining Cass River, Tuscola County provides sportspersons of Outdoor Michigan numerous opportunities.
