Target Shooting Laws

Friday, July 07, 2006

I have a question regarding people shooting/siting-in their guns.
If a person is target shooting in their yard...is there any law to protect
the neighbor next to that person.

Stephanie Gabriel , Maybee MI

Dear Stephanie:

As far as your question, "is there a law to protect next door neighbor from target shooting?"  Laws vary from place to place, so you would have to check with the city or township that you are inquiring about.  I will also forward this email on to my father Fred Trost as law is more of his thing.  It does lead me to an interesting observation I have made in reguards to your question, "is there any law to protect  the neighbor next to that person?"  What sort of protection are you speaking of?  A law in itself can offer no protection of any sort.  For a law to be effective it must be followed and it must be enforced.  As you can see from (Link to silly laws) "The Michigan Silly Laws page on our website there are many laws on the books that are no longer enforced.  If you have concerns about your neighbors target shooting, maybe a good start would be to discuss them with him/her and maybe something can be worked out. Good Luck.

Respectfully Outdoors,

Zachary Trost
