Response to QDM Posting

Saturday, September 09, 2006

I am writing in response to The e-mail on QDM. To me, it sounds
like the writer is bitter about the magazine more so than QDM. I did not always agree with Fred Trost either, and I would of liked to see more about hunting and fishing in the later years. None the less Fred Trost was an outlet to the outdoor activities of Michigan. He brought a perspective to the outdoors that the everyday sportsman could appreciate. Fred did not always
shoot or catch the biggest animal or fish and could laugh at himself. I grew up watching Fred Trost on thursday night, the majority of  outdoor shows are not realistic of Michigan hunting and fishing. In an age of everything electronic and less about outdoor activities, We as sportsman need every voice and outlet to show what the outdoors has to offer. No voice is far worse than a voice that brings out your emotions, good or bad. This is just one sportsman's opinion.

Dave, Warren

Dear Dave:

I want you to know how much I appreciate that you took the time to respond to the QDM email.  It is nice to hear another readers' take on things.  I agree with you the more voices and outlets that sportsman can take advantage of the better.  We are in a time in history where we are seeing a loss in participation in the traditional outdoors.  As you pointed out, the electronic age has made a big impact.   When I was brought up, Hunting and Fishing was a tradition, it was a way of life, and a way to put some exotic dishes on the table. It wasn't always easy and the only reconigition you received for your hard effort was the pride and joy of putting food on the table. Today you find hunters that are only interested in big antlers that don't eat what they harvest, anglers who are after records and just want to catch and release. Then to compound things in many cases the outdoors groups have fragmented into specialized sectors that fight over "ethics" and "science" based on their "area of expertise."

Respectfully Outdoors,

Zachary Trost
